    Employment Insurance: Special Benefits for the Self Employed

    Special Benefits for the Self Employed is a voluntary program that was established in January of 2010, whereby prior to that self-employed individuals were not able to contribute to the Employment Insurance program. 

    Special benefits through the Employment Insurance program include: 

    • Maternity for biological birth mothers,
    • Parental for either biological or adoptive parents,
    • Sickness,
    • Compassionate Care,
    • Parents of Critically Ill Children Benefit. 

    The benefit for Parents of Critically Ill Children was recently introduced  and with the recent enhancement to Compassionate Care benefits from 6 to 26 weeks of benefits these improvements will make this program more attractive to self-employed individuals.

    We will be also be reviewing the My Service Canada Account, the Canada Benefits Finder, and information on Record of Employment.
